Wasn't he mentally ill for a while?? Like bipolar or something? I think this song is a metaphor (ha) referring to his mental illness as something that was destroying him and the band but now he's over it (all you are to me is dead skin) and he's got control of it (you're safe inside my fist)

i think this song is a metaphor for his drug-induced bipolar episode. he became really addicted to pot and stuff while writing the first disc of ...is a real boy and then all the consequences hit at once and he sort of lost it. "love like no other" refers to addiction, "got your scars on my wrist" refers to how he was killing himself with drugs. the chorus is saying that hes done with drugs and alcohol and that theyre just "dead skin." i feel like that middle part from "so heres the plan...our own apartment" means that max somehow...
