A third person maybe a friend, an objective third party he is talking to.
He is madly in love with a woman he knows does not really love him back the same way and he knows this to be true. His friend is telling him she does not love him and he see's this, knows she is wrong for him. But he can not stop loving her and when she tells him she loves him it still makes him feel wonderful even though he knows its not entirely true, so he tells his friend I know she lies and cheats and misleads, but if you could only know how wondereful it feels to hear those words you would understand why I keep holding on to the fantasy hoping it becomes real. I know exactly how he feels.
