I always thought this song was using the analogy of a play to talk about non-conformity and rebelling against the standard way of life...
People are generally expected to live a certain way of life (standard verse and chorus / your script / the stage is set / memorize the soundtrack to your racket / everything written down is an act) and this song is talking about breaking that pattern of living a customary, orthodox life and living a different way...i.e. "deviating from the script" (young hearts don't always beat to standard verse & chorus / we'll deviate from your script / we've plotted our escape / we refuse to memorize).
I don't know, maybe I'm way off with that interpretation, but that's always what this song/these lyrics have meant to me.
