I'm not quite sure bc it gets a little hazy around the middle of the song but based on other songs (Wasteland, Sundays Best) and portions of this one it seems as if he has seen her since the break up "I ain't seen you look so good" and it has only made him long for her more. It seems as if he may even suggest her coming back to CA "California might be warm this time of year
we should go". (Since she has left for Boston to start a new life and left him behind).
Whether or not she did or did not eventually come back with him for a bit is hard to say but the bottom ine to the song (as in many of the other if not all of the songs is that he is so lonely...with or without her but especially without her.
