June Lyrics

Few songs can put a lump in my throat and this is one of them. For me it is about summer or the end of summer to be exact. I had forgotten about this CD, but found it one day and started listening to it. As "fortune" would have it, it was August...pretty much the last month of summer where I am from. Now I am not so sure what Kilbey was thinking. I know he's taking up residence in the northern and southern hemisphere throughout his life. So if it is a "northern hemisphere" song, like it is for me, it'd be reminiscing about the begining of summer...June. I am a pretty tough cookie, but just thinking of the words brings that lump and my eyes well up. It's not so much I hate the other seasons as it is I love summer so much. October - Mid March I spend a lot of time wishing and anticipating summer.

Anyway, back to the song. The words are not so vague and pretty easy to figure out. "In the nest futures hatch", gee, you think that might be a chick hatching (sarcasm helps me choke that lump down).

"Like a child in a field. So it goes, so it yields", reference to fields/crops that grow in the summer and are pretty synonymous with summer.

"In the background constantly", that's me in the other seasons. Either remembering summers past or looking forward to the up and coming summer.

"From the west. Lights go out. It's such a lonely thing to see", doesn't mean much to me. I think of it more lights go on earlier as the days grow shorter.

"Lock the fruit. In a seed. So it grows. So it needs", fruit trees are again synonymous with summer.

"Oh my soul,Soul like her cocoon, Long gone June", the caterpillars have cocooned themselves to weather the winter.

"Her dark sides. Her bare fields", we are at the end of the song and come back to the present. Summer is gone, the nights longer, days shorter and the fields are empty.
