To me, I think it's written from the perspective of someone who died and their spirit still is in love with someone, and he's waiting for her to die so she can join him.
Her knobby knees are when she's older.
I think the second verse is describing the scene of his death. He went night swimming with her with a bit of liquor and ended up drowning.
