Okay I sort of think the Pastor was her dad too. This is really stepping out on a limb but could it be that the girl killed her father the Pastor?

Perhaps she was abused by him. Maybe he wouldn't let her date or marry a person she liked, and she saw this as hypocritical because he was the one to wed so many other people. So she killed him and managed to get away with it.
"And we believe nothing else unless there's proof of it."
But even though she got away with it, most people knew she did it, so...
"You seek out those who forgive."
Maybe that was the main murderer's motive to kill the girl.
As for the "we", it could have more meaning that I've missed, but maybe the killer is just skitso. I'm not sure what the laughter alludes to either.
