I love this song. I don't know what it's 'supposed' to mean but...
'arresting moons within our eyes and smiles'--I see a angel sculpture with frozen eyes and lips in the shape of moons.
'worldly boundaries of dying were...never ours"--death and life are merged, the line is blurred, as the living walk among the dead.
'all was new, just as the black horizon's blue'--a sunrise, a new day, rather than the sunset that most would see in a graveyard.
I don't think it's cynical at all, I think it's peaceful--acceptance of fate and the ability to see the beauty in it. He's able to leave after his contemplation of death, now is not his time. It's not over, and even when it's 'over' it is really only a new day.
