well i thought it meant something like:
this guy is singing about girls in general. he is kind of flippant and unpredictable, and they all think "they know him" (because they want to date him) but they don't.
girls fancy him,he dates them, but only for sex: and once they've realized he's a user, they "look at the floor." Bus he doesn't care that they've all realized he's a user, because they've already "paid at the door" (as in, they've already slept with him).
Hence him not being the "romantic type". he isn't looking for love or relationships.

"Would paying once or maybe twice be really such a crime?"
