In September of 2006, some friends of mine, had one of their close friends die in a tragic car accident. I knew the guy, but we had never spoke that much, and after hearing about his death I was overwhelmed for some strange reason, maybe it was the fact that he had passed at such a young age. I did not attend his funeral, out of respect. I figured if I didn't know him that well, I would not attend and leave attendances to his loved ones and close friends. However, as I’ve witnessed too many times, I heard about people being at the funeral, fronting to be missing him when in reality, everyone in the room knew that him or her had hardly spoken to him at all and wasn't considered a "friend".
With some people, I can understand going to pay your last respects just because you knew him or her, but some people go to put on a show and mingle with the crowd. that's where the line "Im not gunna pretend like we were friends" came from.
The name "Tree Carvings" suited the song best because the tree that his car hit, still stands today with carved messages from loved ones on it.
The line "And so the dollar bill has taken it's place...how it influences your ways" was inspired by one of my best friends that inherited a large amount of money one year and was never the same again. This was a random but true line, that was put in the song.
the line "She's telling me not to worry" is in reference to a hospital worker calming a saddened person or a close friend speaking comforting words.
