I always thought it was an allegory for child abuse. As in:
I'm confused. My heart burns, and my mind tries to make sense of what has happened to me--as I dream.
This man sure looks like my father.
But he can't BE my father.
May father would never do this. This being must have done something equally horrible to my father, or possessed his body.
Else my father would intervene and save me. For my father would never allow anyone else to do this either.
My heart burns. My (view of the) world is shattered.
It might even be sexual abuse that actually occurs at night.
But I don't know.
Translation is good, but I would translate "cushion" as pillow. This is about children's nightmares at any rate, whether or not I'm full of dritt myself. :-D
