I believe everyone has music and songs that they relate to a person they know/knew, a time in their lives, an emotion. This is one of mine.
A friend of mine, I met in a children's home, and he became my brother and best friend. He was bullied badly at the home, though never as viciously as at school. Being a fostered child, he suffered abuse at the hands of his peers, knowing he was different to them. Aged 17 he'd had enough, he committed suicide.
This song is powerful, for me, because it reminds me of things he used to say to me. He was a budding poet, though his work was all buried with him. The idea of a "comforting home, mother's lap" is common wish amongst the homes. He also loved me, as I loved him, though I only found out after his death, so the phrase "I wish I didn't feel for you anymore" brings tears to my eyes
