I think it's about how the person is a Quaker and gets in a fight. He doesn't want to fight back because he's a quaker, which are known for their peacefulness and lovingness, but eventually does fight back. Hence "ex-Quaker". I'm not really sure what the "cat without it's claws...etc..." means entirely, but i'm sure it has something to do with him not being a quaker anymore.
