To me, its about his lover being in emotional pain and he can't do anything to help her or comfort her and its making him feel depressed too, like RagingAnne suggested. Her depression is causing her to withdraw from everyone and she "learned to detest" everyone that she loved.
I also think the last 2 verses are about him going to his father asking for advice and support and comfort, asking him what he can do to help her & what is best for them two.
