that part is metaphorical, or maybe he really is blind. either he is "blind" because his love of his life is gone and he just can't see anything but her, but she is not there to see, or he really is blind. the last line is not that he is literally going deaf, he just can't feel the happiness in the world, like hearing children singing.

well that's how i see the song. great way to end the album. so sad the darkness is gone now :( ...but eileen wouldn't want me to cry over it
