Personally I see in Azathoth's theme the way H.P. Lovecraft (declared atheist) his vision of a supreme god, curiosly this god, Azathoth, has a servant and emmisary, Nyarlathotep, which actually use to bring chaos and destruction, also he is actually very clever and act in a very human like way, easily interacting with men and other species of the mythos (at difference of Azathoth which is an irrational idiot).
