I think this song is telling the story of the french-speaking Acadian people who were treated as enemies during and after the Seven Years' War. The British won, and all French-speaking people were ostracized. Many of them were deported and they sailed down the East Coast of North America, finally settling in Louisiana and becoming known as "Cajuns". In this song, the narrator tells of how his family had relatives down there who had found life to be much better there. The narrator decides to move south, but once he's there he realizes that Lousiana is way too warm for him -

this isn't my turf this ain't my season can't think of one good reason to remain

eventually, he makes the choice to go back home -

set my compass north I got winter in my blood

Also, in the last verse, he says "Acadia, I am coming" ....beautiful song
