I believe this song is how although Jhon & Jimmy are the pride of the town
(Neighbor boy, fathers pride & newspaper)
the narrator is questioning the war but doesn't want to offend them(i bite my tongue).
Also seems to me like he feels somewhat below John & jimmy

but realizes that they are both working towards a goal
