I love the distorted sound here- the whole song has a certain dense quality about it, in terms of memory, something that has passed but is contained in a jar, like a photograph. When I first heard it, it reminded me of this character, Annie, from Midnight Cowboy, (the novel) and the relationships men had with her (she had mechanical/cold sex with any man who lined up for it in the cinema). There's something also very threatening about what may be going on..along with the feeling of regret? loss? of not stepping out of the crowd and doing what he wanted because "ignoring her" although he "adores" her is so much safer (But on severance she made no difference. There's things I won't let her know, as we're perfecting our show."). This woman has evidently developed a new meaning for him which he doesn't share with his friends who may just still see her as an inanimate thing or feel threatened by her nakedness and what it may mean.. ("they laugh behind the trees as she lies naked in the clearing"). However, he does refer to them as "we" which suggests that the people laughing behind the trees may have similar feelings to him. Also there's the clear distance/fear of contact from the girl as well as the men too. But the idea that the girl stays the "same" while feelings on the other side are uncertain/changing is also interesting..
