Great song. Jackson Browne was a very outspoken political person and I think this is to clarify what some people (unfortunately) misunderstand a classing of ideology as being un-patriotic (much like what's going on right now).
I am very much against this war and most things Bush has done, but that does not make me any less American or a patriot than someone who is for the war or Bush.
"I said what I believe in my soul/ Ain't what I see with my eyes/ And we can't turn our backs this time" are probably the best lines of the song. What he feels is right in his heart is not what's going on in the world.
You don't have to be a Dem or Reublican to be a patriotic American. I can identify with this song very much. Awesome song. Greatest songwriter ever.
I realize this post was put up before what's going on now, but Bush is a presidential prodigy compared to what we have now. "Sure ain't no republican" is the only line in this song that Obama could truthfully say. I was listening to Johnboy and Billy the other morning and they had a guy on there talking about our politicians now, and the one thing he said that got my attention was (and he wasn't referencing this song either) "Politicians, especially presidents and his elected officials, use to be patriots who wanted to better our country and...

In todays world, and we can see this especially with our current elected officials (referencing Obama big time), everyone is entirely self serving and once they get into office they have one goal and one goal only...GETTING RE-ELECTED."
I can't believe that we have a president that is so stupid as to think that the way to get our economy back in shape is to drive the country even deeper in debt. I can't wait to have somewhere around a 50-60% tax rate when I get in my 40s, 50s or 60s because our idiot president now THINKS he's helping somebody.
And the line "Sure aint no Republican" is the only line that disappoints me in this song. The democratic party now is so hipocritical when they want more liberal freedoms, but then they want the government to be involved in everything. The government is so deep into our lives now that we have to worry about whether or not we can spank our kids when they do something wrong, and Obama just wants to make that worse.
And yes this country is for religious freedom, but if you are truly a patriot, then you believe that this country was founded by righteous and brave men who wanted it to be founded on Christian principles. "Under God" should not be taken out of the pledge, and the Ten Commandments should not have been taked from the judicial building in Alabama. They are a part of this nations great history, and should not be removed to simply make another group of people "feel better". And as for that, the Confederate Flag should not have been removed from the capital building in Columbia, SC. That flag did not represent slavery, and it did not simply represent our country's rebellion...it represented a vital and important time in this nations history, and all three of these things did for that matter, but now they are gone. And you can thank the liberal Democratic party for that.
In history class you learn that the United States has never lost a war (except for Vietnam, which we didn't lose, we just quit and left). But that is soon not going to be true...we have lost the battle to illegal immigrants, we have lost the battle to the athiests (or anti-Christians), the people have lost the battle to a power hungry governemtn. And the war in which the American people should be fighting to get back everything this country was founded on, fighting to get back everything that we know is right, and instead we are simply standing back on the side-lines and watching it all happen and acting as if there's nothing we can do or as if it's "someone else's problem".
I love this song, and the things it talked about are very true, but when you sit down and think about it, it's not the Democrats that are going to save this country, it's not the Republicans that are going to save this country, Freedom will not even save this country. The only thing that will save us now is God...the God this country was founded on.
You should probably get your facts straight before you say such foolish things. This country was not founded on Christian principles at all. None of our Founding Fathers were Christians, in fact most (if not all) of them rejected the religion altogether. No, our country was founded on Deist principles and religious tolerance, something that you seem to lack.

No righteous man would want this country to be founded on Christian principles. A righteous man would this country to be founded exactly as it was, on the basis of life and liberty.

We've lost the battle to illegal immigrants, but of course, they're also one of the major sources for the food on your table.
What the hell is this war against atheists that you're speaking of? Seriously. No, that's just incorrect. Atheists don't look for war; there has never been a war in the name of atheism. But I'm sure you'll continue your march for the next religious war.
I should have just begun with your last paragraph. You're almost there. Democrats won't save this country. Republicans won't save this country. Freedom won't save it, although it won't hurt, assuming people like you don't attempt to take it away. And God definitely will not save this country, especially since this country was not founded on God. The biggest problem in mankind has always been and sadly will likely always be religion, and the resulting intolerance, hypocrisy, and hatred that has stemmed from it.
