I think this song is about religion. The rainbow is supposed to be a reference to Noah and of promises from God, which is what Jesus was fulfilling as well. Jesus died so that people could grow old, and in return people love him. He seems to have a pretty easy life because he's got angels watching over him to wipe away his tears... but ultimately he's waiting for a pretty gruesome death. In the meantime though the child's life makes sense, he's completely pure and he has a very definite purpose... something most people today don't really have. The singer is wishing that his life were so straightforward and so pure.
