My take on the song is about a relationship gone bad.
Their meeting is actually described in the second bridge. He wants meets a girl who he hopes is the girl of his dreams ('the way it feels to be alive the day that he first met her') but of course, she has her flaws and soon, he's 'wishing one more day to face her'.
'So much to learn, so much to learn' really gives a hint to why the relationship's going bad. They're both really inexperienced, thus he calling her 'his little girl' and why he 'can't carry the weight of a heavy world'. He feels too young to commit.
She finds out about the 'empty beds and bad behavior' and their fight results in 'her eyes ran with anger', she gets 'enraged by things unsaid'.
'Goodnight, goodnight, hope that things work out all right,' the wish of a man to the woman he's leaving.
In my opinion, the best song on their (great) new album. Beautiful and tragic at the same time.
