Not to try to discredit you guys, but I think the meaning is a bit more obvious and specific. I'm pretty sure this is about a guy who likes a girl he met but he's too chicken to ask her out. This is definitely something I can relate to. He tries to wait for the perfect moment whilst "staying in the shadows" once she's alone and away from her friends, "but he goes". He tries not to chicken out because "there's little fear her words could ever hurt me", referring to rejection, but he chickens out...
