Train has to be one of my favorite bands if not my favorite. They have gems like this one all over the place, and it's a shame so many people only know Drops of Jupiter, and maybe, MAYBE Calling All Angels and When I Look to the Sky.
To me this song is about exactly the situation I'm in. Guy and a girl, used to be friends, maybe even good friends. The guy started to like the girl as more than a friend, a lot more. So he started acting really weird. Not like he started flirting with her more or something like that, but he talked to her less. Maybe even got mean.
Now they aren't anything. They aren't friends anymore, and they don't talk. The guy can't stop thinking about her. He misses her, he wants her back in his life, just to have things the way they used to be. He tells her this, even though they both "know" it won't work. He says he's changed, he says he's better. He wants his life back on track, and he thinks to himself, and hopes she'll come back.
When he left, he didn't really want to leave in the first place. He wanted her to stop him, to save him in a sense. He always thought she would. She didn't.
Now all he can do is try to change, try to go back to the way things were, and hope she'll forgive him and do the same.
