You guys are all right. I think Pasat 14's comment was a bit over the top. But it really does sound like it is about this guy and his lover. He does look at her like an angel, she is the most precious thing in his life. Something happens though, like she gets really sick, or gets hurt. This happens while he is not around, so maybe they had temporarily split. When he finds her, or when he sees her next. He isn't able to make her better, he can't save her life. So he sits by her bedside, watching the only thing that matters in life die before him. He tries bitterly not to cry so as to not show her that she really wont make it out this time. (Probably an ongoing, degenerative sickness since he keeps saying "this time") He is ready to do anything for her, but there is nothing to be done, so he simply states
"But I would have lay down
In this puddle beside you,
‘Cause it’s all that I can do"
Then near the end he says "Bleach the mud from off your dress". This would be like either trying to make her well again or making her presentable for her death.
And than also, "you make such an innocent mess of all this". He is saying that even though she doesn't mean to, she is ruining life.
