to me it sounds like a person who is obsessed with their job, acting as a pawn in the workplace, putting money in the company owners pocket. It makes me think of an office buidling, where all the workers have been brain washed into obeying orders; being programmed to comply. The boss, is greedy, not caring how hard his workers slave, and still paying them minimum wage, so he can do what he wants with his money, and his profit, yet the workers are blinded by this fact and they keep breaking their backs trying to make money to attain their wants, wasting their dollars on things they don't really need.
