to me, the two characters in this story had a loving relationship that the guy ended without good reason, and they are trying to remain as close as they always were. "the birth" refers to the beauty of the relationship, and "the death" is the slow process of truly breaking up. (i love that lyric because in life, it is the opposite - although i'm sure a woman going through labor would beg to differ!) so she stays by his side, hoping that he will want to be with her romantically again, but he's indecisive, and she remains hurt. time has passed though, and she has convinced herself it is best for the both of them if she moved on, even though it will break her heart: "The bravest that I've ever been was when I ran away from you."
he doesn't want to lose her, he wants her in his life. but he can't give her what she needs, and does not know if he loves her enough to keep her; it would be selfish of him. but he realizes that he is jealous, and unsure of how to deal with her being with someone new. now that she has let go of him, as hard as it was for her, she hopes that he, too, can finally let her go and rest his weary head.
