I think this song is about how Kate is with this guy, but he drives her absolutely crazy. They don't even particularly care for each other, but they continue to hold onto a relationship that doesn't exist anymore. But because they are in a relationship with someone who they don't particularly like anymore, they continually try to get under the other one's skin because they themselves are frustrated with the whole thing. I've had a couple of friends who have done this type of thing in the past and they all say it was because it was comfortable to be with their significant other, even when they were miserable together.
