He has been riding on a "lost highway," ie his life has been confusing, tumultuous and he hasn't found his way.
Now he sees the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel and he's racing for it. "Hit the gas. There ain't no brakes."
There's obviously a spiritual side of it, too. He has found Jesus and is letting him guide him out of the darkness. "Guide the car, you've got the keys."
