I have to agree that this song is about religion. I don't think it's about a person but rather the institution of religion and it's metamorphesis.
"Mary was a different girl
Had a thing for astronauts
Mary was the type of girl
She always liked to fall apart
Mary was a holy girl
Father whet her appetite
Mary was the type of girl
She always liked to fuck about"
I think this part describes the nature of Christianity in a way. Mary- Christianity- was a different girl- religion- and she hada thing for astronauts- dreamers and those aiming for something above and in outer space. Yet she liked to fall apart, wreak havoc, flakey actions and whimsy defined her. Father -god- whet her appetite, yet she liked to "fuck about" and venture into different areas completely off topic to what was really supposed to concern her.
"Tell me did you see her face?
Tell me did you smell her taste?
Tell me what's the difference,
Don't they all just look the same inside?
Buddha for Mary, here it comes!"
This is just asking if you've felt it, seen it, experienced it and then thought that it was all always the same crap, different presentation and then he proclaims "Budda for Mary here it comes". One religion to replace another.
"Mary was an acrobat
But still she couldn't seem to breathe
Mary was becoming
Everything she didn't want to be
Mary would hallucinate
And see the sky upon the wall
Mary was the type of girl
She always liked to fly"
Mary -christianity- was an acrobat and could shift shapes and twist and turn in every direction yet it never got the chance to breathe and slowly Christianity turned into something which it was not meant to be. Mary- christianity- would hallucinate and lie to itself and abd "see the sky upon the wall". It was confined, blocked in, caged, yet it saw false freedom and skies above. Christianty liked to fly, but within it's walls it remained.
"He said
Can you hear me are you sleeping
She said
Will you rape me now
He said
Leave the politics to madmen
She said
I believe your lies
He said
There's a paradise beneath me
She said
Am I supposed to bleed
He said
You better pray to jesus
She said
I don't believe in god"
This part is just about the downfall of Christianity in my opinions. It's about the temptation and Christianity's fall from grace. The "evil" or whatnot spoke and Christinity listened and started believing the lies and got caught up with politics and once again, went off topic into territory it had no business in and Christinity lost all of which defined it and stopped believing in Jesus so to speak.
