I think this song is about how sometimes you feel like life is overwhelming, and sometimes you feel like the people you know or friends are passing you by and you're left in the dust. You outwardly show that you are confident in yourself but when you've by yourself you don't feel that way anymore. You feel like you can do things if you really try but for some reason or another it doesn't happen.
As you're being left behind you not only know what to do, you don't know what to say. You search for escape from all this because it's frustrating and sometimes depressing.
