I think it's about a person who is going through a lot and they depend a lot on other human being. They always hoped to god they could find someone who would love them and he/ she thinks their friend does so they want to hang onto them. This person loves that human being and they think their friend can get him through any thing. In a way, the main person in the song thinks the friend is an 'ark' and shelters them from the harsh world.
The friend leaves and the person that the song is talking about is left them alone in the 'dark' and now feesl like he/she wants to die and that life is hopeless.
