The second part is I think about something else, these 2 parts don't seem to fit together...The second one is IMHO about a fear of growing old and of responsibilities and about a fear of becoming a parent or a husband. So he decided to to stay home until his heat for her dies down
"But until that time,
I'll be round at mine"
because he probably doesn't feel ready for it.
