I think it's about a broken relationship, he feels lost without having the person in his life, but he doesn't want to idolise them and make them out to be something they're not, even though it seems like the most appropriate way of discribing what they meant to him. He would wait forever to have them back, because he can see what a change they made in his life. However he does doubt himself sometimes, and questions whether they really did change him, or whether it was going to happen anyway, but in the end he always decides to wait around for them, till they're ready.
