I agree. He's waiting to find out further down the road rather than racing ahead to find out. I get the feeling from the lyrics that it's a journey (like back-packing from inn to inn), and the journey is a metaphor for the relationship. He's impatient, he's unsure, but he's willing to wait. It's far from being my favourite on the album, but I definately like the song- especially its pace.
What about the- 'I'm standing in the middle of a good dream'?
Perhaps he thinks he's just going to wake up and it'll all be over? That it's too good to last?
