i just "discovered" this song, and all i can say is that it really touched me. to me it's so beautiful, sad, obscure (maybe even obscene) and the fact that it's so minimalist even puts more effect into the whole thing. to me it's really weird that it marked the top 5 in it's own time. IMO, this is a song about someone being quite optimistic with the result he's going to get, but his mistakes/wrong behavior, in other words, ghosts, make it all fail.
I love this song and cannot believe that during a work-out today I heard it as a techno/rave version sung by a young lady. Nice song and yet the lyrics are still haunting. A certain testament that this is a quality song, no matter what genre it's performed.
