I hate it when everybody assumes that every song that Jim ever wrote is about drugs. If you knew anything at all about him, you'd know that he didn't believe in taking drugs in excess in the first place. He was an alcoholic, not a heroin junky. He frowned upon Pamela's habit of overusing the drug.
Anyway, I see this song as another poem backed by music. Of course, everyone should interpret the poems as the see it. Like he said, real poetry has no meaning.
