i used to think the line "fashion drugs" was about actual drugs, but sometimes when i listen to it, and i think about what their talking about, and the things they seem to stand for, especially for being "anti" at some time, they might be talking about how fashion inebriates people. or he realizes who he is by getting inebriated, but he also realizes the town or place that he is, doesn't make sound, everyone is so complacent and quiet, and he knows he can make a difference by not being like everyone else. and maybe he wants the girl the song is about to realize this about him, and doesn't want her to fall into the same pattern. whether its fashion or drugs, or maybe both. but in "between the rent and me" he talks about getting high at the bus stop.
