To me, Paul is singing about a girl who is unstable, unsure. she doesn't quite know herself.
she keeps trying to reivent herself, trying to prove herself to somebody, anybody.
as unstable as she is, she is above him, and above others. people "stop and stare from start to finish". they watch her life, her 'stunt show'. she performs, she takes risks, she revinvents herself, she tries to prove herself- to anybody and everybody.
he watches her (falling apart?) as if from afar, as if she were not quite real: as if she were a character on television.
"how will you get yourself out of this one?"
i don't quite know what this line means. maybe the girl has gone too far, or realised what an act her life is/has become.
...i doubt that this is a very good interpretation, but that's the impression i got.
This song is truly beautiful...
