in response to Drummah Boih, i agree with your whole theory, but maybe it's more of a family issue, i.e. making your father proud by never sleeping, never slacking off from work, never crying, never dying, until one day you crack, run away and don't return.

either that or it's like, 'when i go out to work i'm never coming home to rest, i will remain at my job.'

Thats similar to what I was thinkink. I was always thinking of a naive child being told by his parents that sleep is wrong. The child is confident and eager to please his parents, so he goes about his childhood with the "when I grow up" parts of the song.

It could be about a man fighting to survive, but possibly at the same time remember how innocent and naive he was when he was young. He is remembering how ambitious he was when he was young and is comparing it to how reality set in.
