I have a new interpretation... perhaps its about a couple, and one went off somewhere for some reason for a bit, and asked her boyfriend to look after her hampster, and then it died, and she comes back and is mad at her boyfriend because her hampster is dead, and in defence he yells:
I SWEAR I NEVER MEANT TO LET IT DIE!
