I'm suprised at all The Used fans commenting on this song and not knowing that this song is straight up written about a recurring dream Bert has where he dies on the way to the hospital. Check almost any interview with Bert about this album, you'll find it there.

Here is MY interpretation of the song: There is one Bert singing to another version of Bert in the back of an ambulance. One is dying and the other is not. Dying Bert knows he's going to die soon and before he does he wants to get some things off his chest, but the other side of him doesn't want him to. His other side, decides that the lies have worked so far, and thus don't need to be known.

But the Dying Bert persists saying:

"before i cross my heart and hope to die at all... (i'll) take off my mask and leave the lies to the liars."

the Lying Bert tells him that it could be a rash decision...

"Will you look them in the face? Could you look me in the face? Three cheers you fooled them all.Come on now, Hip Hip Hooray."

Basically the Lying Bert is telling him, it's done and it'd be pointless to change it, but Dying Bert decides that before he finds his final resting place, he wants his conscience cleared... hence the final chorus.

Wow. See that guys? A whole "Lies For The Liars" song meaning and it has NOTHING TO DO WITH MCR or GERARD. Christ... Haven't any of you heard the rumors that the "feud" isn't a feud at all?

Here's what MIGHT have really happened: Gerard got clean. Bert didn't. They don't hang. Press sees this. Press looks at their old clippings and see Gerard and Bert kissing outside Times Square and spin some asanine story of betrayal and backstabbing. The Used get tired of fielding questions about the sudden fame and success of MCR and start avoiding the issue which makes it look worse than it is. MCR still talk about The Used and it's all positive and for the most part vice versa. And for you diehards, look no further than the DVD portion of Berth which was released a couple of months ago. A circa 2005-era Gerard Way is talking about The Used being a real band... genuine and not fake at all. I know it's old footage, but would you show a clip of your newly-anointed mortal enemy calling you "a good guy"? Fucking think for yourselves, man.

That's all I ask...

side note: This song at one point was called "Cross My Heart And Hope To Die"... don't you think if it was directed at Mr Way, it would've been called "Cross YOUR Heart"? Just saying...

@thecrowing83 aha, but you see now, 14 years later. The album was proven to be directed at Gerard Way. At least Pretty Handsome Akward. But you couldn't have know Bert would spill the beans in an 2019 interview.
