I think you guys are over-interpreting the song by dressing the whole "psychological portrait" of the guy she's talking about. I think in this song she's just talking about that guy who ruins her mood by being a jerk and being critic to her. He just gives himself a style, and it's not what he is for real.
I think its starts to be wrong when you guys start to talk about his political views, nothing in this song says it's wrong to have political opinion and hang hard to them. It's more about is attitude towards her.
"If you're not angry, you're not paying attention": I don't think she's talking about angry people who want revolution at all here in this song. And I would hardly see a huge Elliott Smith fan criticizing people for being always sad/angry about life and society.
