I don't think this is "poking fun" at anything. I think it's describing personal experience and Marc Bianchi is almost putting himself down in this song.

I did this for a number of years and blocked myself in this safe, comfortable state of depression. I think that's what he's talking about. Being like that is "safe" and it also provides him with the misery to keep writing these things.
