This was the first Two Gallants song I heard more than a year ago now. I was hooked. Instantly.
As far as meaning goes, its about relationships (like 98% of all songs ever written). And an apparent bad one. The girl is playing the 'pity me' part (ie.“It’s hard” she said “my fortune’s been quite hard”

Plus, he feels like everyone else knows how bad the situation is too which drives his embarassment of the situation ("When all he hears is the curse of what you did, and all he knows is the need to keep you hid.") Then he finally tells her off and htis the road ("I'll take the door instead.")
