Great song.. possibly the one I can most relate to off of the new album. To me this song is about a guy who's left all alone - all his friends and even his girl left him. But I get the feeling that he's coping with it. I think he would like to get back together with his girl ("let's write the story again where I'm your lover and best friend") but I think he finds relief that there are other people who are in the same predicament as he is.
In a way, I think he tries to let other people know that he's been alone and lonely just like them - and because they share that common bond they aren't really totally alone.
