I belive this song could be about a love relationship that ended, but that he still loves her. But he didn't face this wile they werw together, he placed her inseconed place, ("love to aim at besides") so she left him. He lied about things (line three) and now when she's gone he wants her back (line two). He took the relationship for grand (man I don't know if that's the word), he didn't think she could acctually leave him, he didn't take everything that serious ("We'll work it out", "forever is right where we were"). Now he knows he will always love her ("never be clean").
