This song tells the American folk story which finds its roots in an actual event which took place in St. Louis in 1895. Since then countless musicians have retold the story and have taken some interesting prespectives. I like this version because it is one of the few in which Stagger Lee gets his come-uppins (although a fictional aspect to the story).
i wouldn't say it was an old folk song id consider it blues like mississippi john hurt wrote a song called stack o lee
but the dead's version is about billy delions wife seeking revenge for his death.
but i kno tht the guys real name was william delions and i think "stagger lee's" name was lee shelton
