im probably wrong, but this song to me seems like Adalae is a sly-talking, manipulating ("you're only precious til you meet your needs" and "you always get your way") girl who has always wanted to be famous and keeps telling people she one day will be-
"you say we'll see you on the silver screen"
and
"your only enemy's the calender"- meaning its only time and how its flying past that is getting in the way.
like, hes singing to a woman who is well past the age of becoming famous yet she still believes she'll make it...
and in the first verse, i think the "town" hes refering to is HollyWood...
i think by the end, everyone knows she'll never make it and that her lifes down the drain "It's ok cause everybody knows your circumstance" but she still tries and still puts up this front that shes worth alot, "And you know you're only worth what you get paid" (a play on words, this could be a compliment in her eyes and an insult in his?), "Nobody can buy your love"
i think that last one is also a play...
like, you might say that to someone who was nice because you know they're a good person whio can't be bought...
but hes saying it to her because she thinks shes worth far more money than anyone would pay...
