While I cannot give a source, I remember an interview where Ronnie James Dio explained the meaning behind the song. His inspiration for it was a princess and a stableboy falling in love, which fits perfect with the lines:
"A bed of straw
Against the lace"
After all, a straw bed is something a poor person would have been sleeping on, while lace is a fabric only rich people could afford in any historical age. As you can see from the chorus, they would eventually be torn apart by the different worlds they belonged to.
